The end of the school year means I’ve headed back home to New York City. Luckily, the days of being reunited with my Temple besties is right around the corner. Being raised in the big apple means I know how to survive the torture that is Summer. Here are a few of my tips and tricks to make summer more bearable.
6 tips to survive NYC this summer:
1. Updos are a must!
Let’s face it, sweating is not cute, and because of the humidity my hair is a disaster, so it is better off in a ponytail, braid, or my all-time favorite bun on the top of my head.
2. Wear sunglasses.
Protect your eyes and wear a pair of sunglasses. Not only are they the perfect accessory, they also come in loads of colors and shapes. Have fun picking your perfect pair! My favorite pair right now are my Quay Australia High Key Aviators!
3. Water, water, water!!
Hydrate!!! The summer heat means you’re going to be sweating a lot, and in turn you’re more prone to become dehydrated quicker. Stay hydrated! I recommend carrying around a reusable water bottle, one that is insulated is a plus! It’ll keep your drink cold all day! I never leave my house without my S’Well water bottle.
4. Sunscreen always!
Aside from drinking water this is probably the most important tip on this list. Sunburns are not fun! Even if you’re one of those people who thinks you don’t burn here’s some incentive: skin cancer isn’t cute either! My favorite sunscreen is the Hawaiian Tropic Antioxidant+
5. Drink iced coffee.
I get it, I get it I just told you all to drink a lot of water and you should—but summer and iced coffee go hand in hand! Try not using straws when possible and help save the sea turtles! Until I can get back to my Richie’s iced coffee, Dunkin will have to do!
6. Give yourself extra travel time.
Summer makes everyone want to slow down and take their time because let’s face it—nobody wants to show up anywhere looking sweaty and gross.
Spending a summer in NYC is the perfect time to explore and be a tourist! Here are some suggestions of places to visit this summer.
5 places to go in NYC this summer:
1. A Baseball Game.
Tis the season for America’s past time—Baseball! New Yorkers love their baseball. Depending where you are and who you ask they’ll tell you they’re either a Mets fan or a Yankee fan. Growing up near Citi Field where the Mets play has made me a flushing faithful fan for life!
2. Coney Island.
Located in Brooklyn, it’s the New York version of the Jersey Shore (kinda). There’s a boardwalk, beach, and even some rides like the iconic cyclone roller coaster.
3. Have picnic in Flushing Meadow Park.
Not far from Citi Field, there is always a slew of fun things going on there and there is also so many places to take the perfect Instagram picture! Aesthetics are everything!
4. Walk the highline!
In Downtown Manhattan and overlooking the Hudson River, the old railroad turned botanical garden is the perfect way to enjoy a day in the smoldering heat!
5. Brooklyn Bridge Park.
In the famous Brooklyn neighborhood known as DUMBO, Brooklyn Bridge Park is the perfect summer escape from the city. It is right on the other side of the East River, you still get Manhattan vibes without being in Manhattan.
While I love spending my summers in NYC, I am so excited to get back to Temple this fall and see what this semester has in store! Feel free to reach out to me on my social media @gabbyaarias!
