This past Saturday, April 6th, a few members of our chapter had the opportunity to attend a Philadelphia Union soccer game and receive a behind the scenes tour of the facilities. Once we finally made our way down to Talen Energy Stadium (after making a few wrong turns) we met up with Temple alumnus, Andrew Dorais, who led us through the office space of marketing and ticket sales for the Philadelphia Union.
Everyone could tell as soon as we walked in how fun and chill the culture was. The modern space was filled with personal decorations at desks along with plenty of props and game. The two office spaces were separated by a room with chairs and a huge TV where staff would gather to do work on big game days.
Andrew led us into their conference room where we met Amanda Young Curtis, the team publicist, and Erica Scheer, the manager of communications. They told our group about how they got to the positions they currently hold at the Union as well as shared details about player relations, networking, and how they found their spots in a male-dominated industry. We had an all-female group attend the event, which made their words and advice meaningful for those looking to go into sports PR.
We were extremely thankful for the conversation we had with them, especially after hearing how busy they are on game days. They had to leave quickly after to set up a suite for visiting Phillies players! This game, in particular, had a lot of special activities which go beyond just the soccer game, which they really try to bring to every Union game. Outside the stadium, before kickoff fans had the opportunity to enjoy music, games, and free samples. For example, Carson Wentz’s food truck, Thy Kingdom Crumb, was outside the stadium handing out free food to everyone! The BBQ bacon burger was to die for! The perfect way to start off a soccer game. We also enjoyed a few games of corn hole, live music and free Turkey Hill ice cream!
Once we made it into the stadium we met back up with our friend Andrew and finally sat down to enjoy the game we had seen everyone preparing all afternoon for. The warm weather along with all the cheering fans made for a perfect game day. After being down in the first half we watched the Union make two goals to win the game in the second half! The moment we had all been waiting for, everyone in the stands jumped out of their seats as music started blasting while blue and yellow smoke filled the air!
Overall, everyone had an amazing time! I am so happy we had the opportunity to experience the culture and insights of professionals who work in sports PR. Not only did we have the opportunity to learn about a niche industry but we had the opportunity to bond with PRSSA members in a fun way outside of our regularly scheduled meetings! I can confidently say I cannot wait till we host another PRSSA event next year with the Philadelphia Union!
