It’s hard to believe that I’ve been living in Philadelphia for almost two years. It feels like just yesterday I was packing up my room at home getting ready to move into my first dorm room. Throughout those two years, I have taken advantage of what it is like to attend a University that is just minutes from the heart of Philadelphia. Every weekend is a chance to experience something new in the city, yet, I find myself revisiting the same locations/events more often than not. Here’s some of my “Philly Phavorites!”
1. Reading Terminal Market
Reading Terminal Market is probably one of the largest attractions in Philadelphia….I mean when you factor in it being near the convention center, having endless amounts of food, and even having produce shops inside, it’s no wonder this place is always packed. The market is a perfect place for indecisive people like me who never know what they want to eat because it has almost every kind of food imaginable. Although, my personal favorite has to be a chicken caprese sandwich from “By George!” followed by a chocolate mousse cake from “Termini Bros,” there’s something for anyone and everyone here!
2. Cira Greene
Located in West Philly, this rooftop oasis is a must see! Cira Green gives you a view of the city...eleven floors up. This green space is the perfect spot to hang out with friends on a nice day. Bring a blanket and some snacks and spend an afternoon tanning, studying, or just taking in the sights of Philly. This is also a perfect place to grab that insta-worthy pic. If this hasn’t persuaded you to visit, Shake Shack is right down the street, so grab some food and enjoy it a few flights up!
3. Spruce Street Harbor Park
Spruce Street Harbor Park is my favorite place to be on a summer night. From the roller rink, carnival-style games, ferris wheel, hammocks and more, there’s something to do no matter your age. Coming down here after a day of interning is the perfect way to unwind and still be able to enjoy summer without feeling like it’s consumed by work. The best part is, during the winter, the roller rink is transformed into an ice skating rink which makes for a perfect night out with friends!
4. Restaurant Week
Restaurant week is (in my opinion) one of the best weeks of fall semester. During this week, a bunch of high-end restaurants in Center City offer discounts on three-course lunches and dinners. Dressing up with my friends and getting some REAL food for $20-$35 is a deal I can’t pass up. Restaurant week also almost always falls during the time where I desperately need a break from the same three meals I cook during the school year.
5. Rittenhouse Square
Rittenhouse has to be my favorite part of Philly. Whenever it’s a nice day out and my friends and I have some free time, we pack a blanket and our bookbags and head there. There’s something about laying out on the grass that makes studying and homework almost bearable. Rittenhouse is also the perfect place to see a bunch of dogs, so who could resist?
Whether you’re in Philly for the summer like me, or coming back for fall semester, be sure to check out each of these spots/events and immerse yourself in all that Philadelphia has to offer!
